The Nutcracker by Alexander Dumas – The first book to be read from my shelf.
This book is both much the same as the ballet, and yet quite different. I had read it once before, about 2 1/2 years ago, but, unusually for me, I did not recall much about it.
The Nutcracker has all the charm and strangeness of an old fairytale, told in a whimsical manner that I quite loved. The story is a little dark at times, but that served to make the rest better. I’m sure there’s an allegory or a illustration of greater Truths buried in this sometimes odd tale, but I’m unsure what it is, so I plan to store it on my mental shelf for contemplation. Sometimes; my deepest understanding comes from the Lord using whimsical fiction.
I’m keeping this on my shelf for a reread – maybe at Christmas next time.
