Mysteries Pointing Toward the One Who Knows Every Secret and the Answer to Every Conundrum.

For the Temple by G.A. Henty – it has been a long time since I had read a Henty book!

This book is sad. In part, because I know how it ends. I know history, and this book is more history than story in a lot of ways. I know that no amount of battle, treaties, or longing will stop the desecration of a nation and the ruin of the temple that John and his family long to save. It’s sad to read about the numbers slaughtered by the Romans, as the people refused to hold to promises of allowing their enemies to live – so neither side allowed quarter nor (frequently) held to quarter when promised.

I was encouraged by John’s perspective in the end – that God had given the Temple and Jerusalem over to the Romans, and they had, therefore, been His emissaries of justice. I still grieved over the loss of life – even though, those lives were lost nearly 2,000 years ago.

I plan to retain this book on our shelves. (I finished this a few weeks ago – I’m late to post.)
