The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows – This is the third book on my shelf.
I listened to this audiobook in January, so I wasn’t completely sure I’d be able to get as wrapped up in the book this time around, since it hasn’t been that long. The charm of this book pulls you in, however, even if you know exactly where the story is headed at every moment.
This reading I found myself more struck by the occupation deprivations and trials. Life on the island could be horrific, but through it all, they still found beauty through reading, friendship, and ordinary things like sunsets. And beauty helped them cling to hope. Even those in the unimaginable horrors of the concentration camp.
And maybe that’s one reason God gave us beauty. He knew that the world would not remain the perfect Eden, but He knew that beauty could bolster our spirits even in the darkest night, and through that tiny glimpse of Him (because isn’t He the Creator and highest degree of beauty?) we would find the hope to keep going.
I’m happy to keep this book on my shelf.
